Bing Indexing Case Study

Recently, I was hired by a company that was having a hard time getting Bing to index their website. Google was able to index their site, but Bing was choosing not to.

In three hours, I was able to figure out the problem (JavaScript) and sent over a series of steps for the team to implement to allow Bing to properly crawl and index their content. As you can see, their indexed pages are now finally growing, and they are at 147 after the fix that I had the team implement.

Not Indexed Issue

This image is from Bing Webmaster Tools. When they (client) reached out to me, all of their pages had a “Discovered but not crawled” message, which told me that Bing was having an issue with their website.

Why is Bing Not Indexing my Website? – Bing Indexing Help

If your website or webpages are not indexed on Microsoft Bing, it is most likely due to the website not following the Microsoft Bing Guidelines. Recently, I was hired by a company to help get their website indexed on Bing. I was able to do that after suggesting they implement a dynamic JavaScript rendering fix / a fix to the no script tag.

What Was Done

It took me a total of three hours to figure out the Bing indexing issue with their website. Below are the main areas that I focused on to fix the Bing indexing issue.

URL Command Check

Within Bing (and Yahoo), I manually checked to see if Bing had any pages indexed. They did not, which led me to check their site further.

Google Search Console

Before jumping into Bing, I looked at their GSC account to see what Google was seeing and indexed.

Sitebulb

I crawled the entire site with Bing’s bot to see what their crawler would see. There were no apparent SEO issues.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Within Bing Webmaster Tools, I focused on the Site Explorer section to see what pages were attempting to be crawled and looked into the Microsoft Quality Guidelines section.

JavaScript

During my check, I put the site into Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome to see how the site would load. After turning off the JavaScript in Edge, I noticed that the HTML content was not seen.

Steps

After seeing that the JavaScript was causing an issue, I asked the team to pre render the JavaScript to allow Bingbot to see their HTML content

Next Steps

Getting this client on Bing will allow them to reach a new audience looking for them. Bing powers Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and Ecocia, so getting indexed on Bing should drive an additional 5-15% more SEO traffic to their site in 2025 as this was never indexed for all of 2024.
